Yvonne Kason, MD introduced the term Spiritually Transformative Experiences (STEs) to describe powerful inner events that permanently reshape a person’s sense of self, meaning, and purpose. Rather than viewing these experiences as pathological, Kason recognized them as initiatory—natural expressions of human spiritual potential. STEs include mystical unity experiences, kundalini or spiritual-energy awakenings, near-death experiences, death-related visions, heightened intuitive capacities, and sudden bursts of inspired creativity. What unites them is not their form, but their transformative impact: a deepening of compassion, a reorientation toward service, and a more expansive view of reality. Kason’s authority came not only from her medical and psychotherapeutic training, but from lived experience. After surviving multiple near-death events and a profound spiritual awakening, she dedicated her life to building bridges between medicine, psychology, and spirituality. She went on to found Spiritual Awakenings International, offering education, language, and community to those undergoing spiritual emergence. In a culture that often misunderstands non-ordinary states, Kason’s work stands as a compassionate reminder: some experiences don’t need to be cured—they need to be understood, integrated, and honored. Not all awakenings arrive quietly. Some arrive to change everything.
